1948-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-022

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team with David Bloomberg documenting Stage A and David Mulberry documenting Stage B, this 1948-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-022 shows an S/S South repunched mintmark. Stage A is characterized by light north-south die scratches at the 19 of the date, with the reverse at early die state. Stage B shows the obverse and reverse both progressing, with additional markers documented by Mulberry. Two die stages with separate discoverer attributions give this variety an unusually well-documented attribution history spanning multiple researchers. The southward secondary S impression is the primary diagnostic, separating WRPM-022 from other 1948-S repunched mintmark varieties in the Wexler catalog. Bronze Wheat Cents of 1948 were struck at San Francisco in the standard 95% copper composition, and the die scratches at the date area on Stage A provide reliable obverse markers for confirming early die state attribution.
