1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

An S/S West variety documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 is notable for documenting both a die clash and a reverse die change within its four-stage production history. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-309 / DMR-008 for Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B with die scratches North-South on obverse at LMDS and a die crack from right wheat grains to rim at LMDS, and Stage C with a die clash at throat at LDS and reverse at LDS; then UVC-310 / DMR-009 for Stage D with obverse at LDS and reverse die changed to EDS. The die clash at Stage C and the subsequent reverse replacement at Stage D document the full production narrative. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1948-S had a mintage of approximately 81.7 million pieces at the San Francisco Mint.
