1948 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Rotating counterclockwise from a pivot near 11 o'clock, the hub displacement on this 1948 Washington quarter obverse die produces spread across the date, designer John Flanagan's JF initials, the lower ribbon beneath Washington's queue, and the TY of LIBERTY, with slight evidence also visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. The 11 o'clock pivot means design elements in the lower right quadrant of the obverse — opposite the pivot — display the strongest separation between primary and secondary images, which explains why the date and designer's initials show the most prominent doubling. Obverse die markers include a die gouge positioned above the right end of the horizontal bar on the L in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die gouge to the right of the lower left branch of the heraldic eagle's olive branch. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDO-005 with no known cross-references, this variety is one of at least five documented doubled die obverses for the 1948 Philadelphia quarter, a post-war issue struck in the 90% silver composition that would continue through 1964.
