1948 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Pivoting from approximately the 10 o'clock position, the 1948 WDDO-004 Washington quarter displays a counter-clockwise spread visible on the date, the designer's initials, the lower ribbon, and LIBERTY. The rotational nature of the doubling means elements farthest from the pivot point — such as the date at the bottom of the obverse — exhibit the widest separation between primary and secondary images. Obverse die markers include a die gouge running east-northeast from inside the center loop of the 9 in the date. On the reverse, a die gouge runs south-southwest from the lower left of the A in STATES through the upper right of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. These specific gouge positions confirm attribution to this particular working die. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948 25¢ WDDO-004, this variety has no other known cross-references. Washington quarter doubled dies from the late 1940s remain scarce, as the comparatively low mintages and heavy wartime-era circulation reduced the survival rate of identifiable examples.
