1948 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-040

Description

Classified as a D/D Tilted (Rotated) variety and sharing a die marriage with WDDO-006, this 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark is notable for pairing an RPM with a doubled die obverse on the same coin. The die marriage with WDDO-006 means coins from this die pair carry two independently collectible attributions — the repunched D mintmark and the doubled die obverse, both on the obverse die — making it sought-after among variety specialists who value multiple attributions per specimen. The D/D tilted classification indicates the secondary D impression sits at a rotational angle relative to the final position. Die markers include a die clash at the throat on the obverse, where transferred reverse design elements are visible from an instance when the dies struck without a planchet between them. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-040, the fortieth documented RPM for this date reflects the active hand-punching at Denver during the postwar period. The RPM/DDO die marriage, confirmed by the cross-reference to WDDO-006, substantially elevates this variety’s appeal beyond a typical single-attribution repunched mintmark. Die gouge present centered below W in WE. Small die gouge (dot) left of N in CENT approximately two-thirds from the top.
