1948 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-031

Description

Numismatic research methodology for repunched mint marks demands both patience and precision — and WRPM-031 on the 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent represents one outcome of that disciplined approach. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-031, this variety records a working die where the D mint mark was applied at least twice, creating the diagnostic overlap that separates an RPM from a normally punched die. Researchers building catalogs of this depth must establish that each new submission is genuinely distinct from all previously listed entries, which requires detailed comparison of repunching direction, magnitude, position relative to the date digits, and any accompanying die markers such as scratches, polish lines, or flow marks. The thirty-first entry for the 1948-D date confirms the richness of this issue for die variety study and the sustained commitment of specialists who have examined these common coins with uncommon care over many years. The 1948-D cent's availability in quantity ensures that the research community has ample material for continued discovery. No cross-references beyond the Wexler system are published for this entry.
