1948 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-027

Description

Every repunched mint mark in the Wexler catalog tells two stories simultaneously — one about the moment of die preparation when the mint mark punch was misaligned, and another about the researcher who decades later detected that misalignment and documented it. WRPM-027 on the 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-027, belongs to both narratives. The die itself was prepared at the Denver Mint sometime in 1948, when a die setter applied the D punch to a working die and, finding the result unsatisfactory, struck again — embedding a permanent record of the correction into the steel. The discovery came years or decades later, when a researcher examining 1948-D cents under magnification noticed the telltale secondary impression and submitted it to the Wexler Team for formal attribution. The 1948-D date's position within a dense cluster of RPM-rich Denver dates from the late 1940s makes it a natural focus for die variety specialists working through the postwar Lincoln Cent series. No cross-references beyond the Wexler system are currently published. Each variety represents another data point in the ongoing census of Denver's die preparation.
