1948 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

Historical die-making at the United States Mint followed a hierarchical process — master die to master hub to working hub to working die — but the final step of adding a branch-mint letter was always performed by hand, and WRPM-023 on the 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent captures one outcome of that manual operation. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-023, this variety preserves overlapping D mint mark impressions on a working die where the punch was struck at least twice. The 1948-D date falls within one of the richest periods for RPM documentation in the Lincoln Cent series, with the late 1940s Denver issues collectively yielding hundreds of cataloged repunched mint marks across multiple dates. Each entry in the catalog corresponds to a unique working die, meaning WRPM-023 represents one specific obverse die that can be identified through its particular combination of repunching direction, separation distance, and any accompanying die markers such as scratches or polish lines. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog have been published. The variety awaits independent confirmation in other reference systems.
