1948 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-019

Description

Cherrypicking for die varieties on common-date Lincoln Wheat Cents offers one of numismatics' most accessible collecting experiences, and the 1948-D is a prime candidate — WRPM-019 is one of dozens of repunched mint marks cataloged for this date. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-019, documenting a working die where the D mint mark shows evidence of being punched more than once during the die preparation process. The concept behind cherrypicking is straightforward: acquire common coins at face value or minimal premium, then examine them under magnification to identify varieties that carry numismatic significance far exceeding their purchase price. With the 1948-D yielding RPMs numbered into the high thirties, any group of these cents examined methodically has a realistic chance of containing an unattributed repunched mint mark. The hand-punching method employed at Denver through 1988 meant that each working die was individually susceptible to repunching, and the large number of dies consumed for the 1948-D cent production multiplied those opportunities. No cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are currently published for this entry.
