1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

Catalogued in the Wexler files as 1948-D 1c WRPM-014, this Lincoln Wheat Cent variety features a D/D tilted (rotated) mintmark, where the primary D impression was set with a slight cant before the secondary, corrected D was applied over it. The die progressed through two documented stages. Obverse Stage A: a medium die gouge dot is visible in the field above the right side of the bowtie, and a series of die gouges clusters between the bottom of the bust and the rim to the right of VDB. Stage B retains the obverse markers but the smaller of the grouped gouges is weak or missing. On the reverse, Stage A shows a short die scratch extending south from the left bottom of the C in CENT. Stage B introduces a die gouge to the right of the right wheat stalk and a die scratch between the U and M of UNUM. A tilted repunch is among the more visually interesting RPM types because the displaced impression often appears as a small secondary D rotated relative to the primary, detectable at modest magnification. The 1948-D cent is a bronze-composition issue from the Denver Mint, with a large mintage but active variety collecting within the Lincoln cent specialty.
