1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-012

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1948-D 1-cent WRPM-012, this Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark with an extensively documented die marker inventory spanning both obverse and reverse. Obverse markers include a die gouge in the field to the left of the 1 in the date, a die gouge in front of the lips, and a small die gouge paired with a short SE die scratch positioned next to each other under the eyelid — a distinctive marker combination where two different types of die surface anomalies appear adjacent to each other in the portrait's fine detail area. Reverse markers are equally comprehensive: a SE die scratch to the left of the C in CENT; a long N/S die scratch starting at the bottom of the E in ONE, continuing south through the T and ending to the left of the T in CENT; a die chip below the upper crossbar of the T in CENT; and EW die scratches seen on AMERICA and beneath. No external cross-references are currently known. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1948, composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse. The long die scratch tracing from the E of ONE through the T and ending near the T of CENT creates an extended linear marker that spans multiple letters, functioning as a path-like diagnostic that can be followed through the reverse inscription to confirm die identity with high confidence.
