Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1948-D 1-cent WRPM-009 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #6 and Coppercoins 1948D-1MM-011, this Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a D/D Northeast and tilted (rotated) repunched mint mark. Two documented die stages provide detailed attribution markers. Obverse Stage A shows north-south die scratches on the 8 of the date. Obverse Stage B develops circular die scratches above the eye, a die scratch in front of and inside the ear, a die scratch on the cheek, a die scratch between the R and T of LIBERTY, and a die scratch running north from the top left of the T in LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A has no noted markers, while Reverse Stage B shows a die chip on the bottom of the O in ONE, an east-west die scratch inside the N of UNITED, a die scratch running west from the E to D of UNITED, and a die gouge on the left side of the last A as well as inside the upper A of AMERICA. The triple cross-referencing across Wexler, CONECA, and Coppercoins systems confirms this as a well-documented variety recognized by all major attribution services.
