1948-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-1055 and DMR-007, the 1948-D RPM-006 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D/D repunched mintmark oriented Northeast with visible serif traces — a triple-punched variety where three successive applications of the Denver D mintmark punch left overlapping serif impressions displaced toward the northeast. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B showing both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The triple repunching with northeast displacement and serif visibility provides a strong diagnostic signature, as the D letter's serif terminals create sharp reference points where three layered impressions can be distinguished from each other under magnification. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1948 in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — the composition having returned to the pre-war formula after the wartime steel (1943) and shell casing brass (1944-45) years. Each coin weighs 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse Lincoln portrait, and the wheat ears reverse served through 1958. The D/D/D designation indicates the mintmark punch was applied three separate times, with the first two placements requiring correction. The northeast displacement direction means each successive correction moved the punch toward the upper right, and the serif traces — remnants of the D's decorative end strokes — are particularly visible because serifs extend beyond the main letter body and create fine parallel lines when overlapping from multiple punch applications.
