1948-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001 on the 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is the first catalogued repunched mintmark variety for this date and mint, catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-298, DMR-002. The repunch is a D/D South: the secondary D impression is displaced to the south of the final mintmark position. Die state documentation is notable for the Stage A marker: a small die chip is present outside the upper right wheat grains at Early Die State, a chip that was no longer visible at Late Die State, implying the chip filled or wore away between early and late production. Stage B is Middle Die State. The 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze at the Denver Mint three years after the end of World War II, in the era when normal bronze production had resumed following the steel-cent years of 1943.
