1947 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1947 Washington quarter with strong spread on LIBERTY and lighter spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials and the ribbon end. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1947-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, the date, the lower end of the ribbon and the initials of the designer, and faintly on IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse a SW/NE scratch lies below the LI of LIBERTY and a crack crosses the bottom of the bust. On the reverse a gouge joins the E and the R in AMERICA, a scratch heads north from the O in OF, and a crack descends the eagle's right wing. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-I, and Kevin Flynn submitted it. VarietyVista credits Delma K. Romines. Under UVC-0638 and DMR-002, an early stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B, middle, shows a light scratch running south from the L of LIBERTY, a light crack on the E of QUARTER, and a small die chip beneath the center bar of the E of AMERICA. In stage C both sides are late.
