1947 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1947 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1947 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. Light extra thickness, along with a close spread toward the center, appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the obverse, an E/W crack crosses the top of the head, and there are gouges above the N in IN, left of the T in LIBERTY, and right of the bow. On the reverse, a crack follows the eagle's right wing toward the Q in QUARTER, and another follows the top of the left wing. Feeder finger scrapes cross the first S in STATES, the MER of AMERICA and the eagle's left wing. The left wing also has a strong but short N/S scratch, two gouges sit in the gap separating the P and L in PLURIBUS, and many gouges lie under the tail feathers. Keith Christenson submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
