Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team under variety ID 1947 25¢ WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse displays light extra thickness with a close spread towards the center on USA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. No cross-references to other attribution services are currently known. The obverse carries an east-west die crack across the top of the head, a die gouge above the N in IN, a die gouge left of the T in LIBERTY, and a die gouge right of the bow. The reverse die shows extensive diagnostics including die cracks along the eagle's right wing extending towards the Q in QUARTER, a die crack along the top of the eagle's left wing, and feeder finger scrapes through the first S in STATES, the MER in AMERICA, and the eagle's left wing. Additional markers include a strong but short north-south die scratch on the eagle's left wing, two die gouges between the P and L in PLURIBUS, and multiple die gouges below the tail feathers. The abundance of reverse die markers makes this variety readily attributable once located, though the subtle doubling requires careful examination.
