1947 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Among the earliest Roosevelt Dime doubled die obverses, DDO-002 on the 1947 silver issue presents medium-strength extra thickness distributed across the date, John R. Sinnock's JS designer initials at the neck truncation, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY. Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Pickers' Guide, this variety carries significant collector recognition and premium. Die markers UVC-144 and DMR-003 fingerprint this specific working die across three documented stages of progression. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, with clean surfaces and no supplementary die damage. By Stage B, die scratches extend east from the back of the bust point — indicating mid-die-state wear — and the reverse develops a double die clash visible on the left side, where incuse design transfer from the obverse die appears superimposed on the reverse fields. Stage C reaches late die state, though this progression remains unconfirmed pending additional specimen documentation. The medium spread intensity makes the date digits and the JS initials particularly effective diagnostic checkpoints, as the compact letterforms show proportionally stronger visible displacement than the broader motto and LIBERTY inscriptions. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams, the 1947 Roosevelt Dime represents just the second year of the series following its 1946 debut, a period when die preparation processes were still being refined for the new design. The FS-101 cross-reference confirms this as the most significant DDO for the date.
