Description

Struck near the end of the Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1946 VDDR-004 is a VarietyVista doubled die reverse showing extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design, produced from 1916 through 1947 with no half dollars struck in 1922, 1924 through 1926, or 1930 through 1932, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coins in American numismatics. Die stage documentation shows Stage A at early die state unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die-state unconfirmed, and a later stage at late die state where the reverse exhibits a die gouge under the right ground line. The extra thickness across three separate legend elements suggests a hub doubling event with broad displacement, and the half dollar's large format provides a canvas where even subtle reverse doubling can be detected by examining the lettering under magnification. The Walking Liberty series was replaced by the Franklin half dollar in 1948, making late-date varieties from the final years of particular interest to collectors of this iconic design.
