1946 Walking Liberty Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1946 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1946 Walking Liberty half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. A very strong Class I counterclockwise (CCW) spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU), the U of UNITED, the pine needles and the left wing feathers. Wexler records three stages. Obverse Stage A has no recorded markers. Obverse Stage B adds scratches running NW off the top of TRUST's second T. Obverse Stage C is a heavily polished die with a gouge (dot) between IN's N and WE's E. Reverse Stage A shows very clean doubling, and the die has no metal flow lines yet. Reverse Stage B has light flow lines on the letters and design elements, EPU above all, and Reverse Stage C shows very heavy metal pull across the whole die. John Bordner submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-R-I, its Cherrypickers number is FS-50-1946-801 (011.1), Breen lists it as #5215, and Fox as V-101. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
