Description

From the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver, this 1946 Washington Quarter DDO-005 exhibits light spread on LIBERTY. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0632 and DMR-011, three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid die state where a die scratch runs southeast through the U of TRUST and the reverse is also MDS, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B die scratch through TRUST provides the most reliable secondary attribution marker, intersecting a specific letter at a defined angle that distinguishes this die from others with similar LIBERTY doubling. The 1946-S quarter represents the first full year of post-war production at San Francisco, which had operated under extraordinary wartime demands producing coinage for domestic circulation and allies. Light spread on LIBERTY indicates subtle hub displacement — enough to produce thickened lettering under magnification but not the dramatic separation seen on stronger doubled dies.
