1946 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Reaching the eighth cataloged repunched mintmark for a single date and mint, WRPM-008 of the 1946-S Jefferson Nickel demonstrates the remarkable variety richness uncovered in early postwar nickel coinage. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety stands near the top of the RPM census for 1946-S, reflecting both the imprecision inherent in hand-punched mintmarks and the dedicated searching that collectors have invested in this series. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, which won the 1938 design competition, provides the backdrop against which the S mintmark sits and where evidence of double-punching must be sought. The 1946 San Francisco production run was sizable as the Mint replenished circulating coinage after wartime demands, meaning a substantial number of working dies were prepared with hand-applied mintmarks. Higher-numbered RPM designations like WRPM-008 are frequently more challenging to locate, as they often exhibit subtler repunching that requires careful magnification. For collectors building a comprehensive set of 1946-S RPMs, WRPM-008 represents one of the later additions to the census.
