1946-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-006 with universal variety code UVC-529 and die marriage record DMR-012, this 1946 San Francisco Jefferson nickel shows an S over S repunched mintmark shifted to the west, designated MMS-002 with a trumpet tail style. Four documented die stages chart the die's progression. Stage A in early die state and Stage B at mid-die state both have unconfirmed markers. By Stage C, both the reverse and obverse have reached late die state. Stage D shows both sides at very late die state, where the full extent of the die deterioration is visible alongside the repunched mintmark. The trumpet tail mintmark style, where the lower curve of the S flares outward, is a distinctive feature of certain San Francisco dies from this period and adds a secondary diagnostic beyond the westward repunching itself.
