1946-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
RPM-004 on the 1946-S Jefferson Nickel presents a westward repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-353 and DMR-006, designated S/S West, additionally identified as MMS-004 (Sans Serif) — indicating the mintmark punch used was the sans-serif style S. The 1946-S Jefferson Nickel is a post-wartime issue returned to the standard copper-nickel alloy after the 35% silver Wartime Nickel program ended in 1945. The S mintmark appears on the reverse at the right side of Monticello, and RPM-004's secondary impression is displaced to the west of the primary S. Three die stages document the variety: Stage A, Stage B, and Stage C, reflecting the full progression of this die. The MMS-004 designation connecting this variety to a specific sans-serif mintmark punch style provides an additional identification layer useful when comparing closely related 1946-S RPM varieties. Collectors should note the return to standard nickel composition in 1946 means these coins do not carry the 35% silver premium of the wartime series, but RPM-004's dual MMS and RPM attribution makes it a crossover variety of interest to specialists in both mintmark style and repunching categories.
