1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

1946 WDDO-022 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY and the eyelid have a close spread, and a very minor spread is visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the hair, and the top and back of the head. Obverse Stage A is Type I. The upper nose has a die clash, and just under the bust, north of the date's 6, is a die chip. In LIBERTY, a NE scratch starts near the T's center and crosses the Y, ending at the Y's upper right fork. West of the chin, the field has an X-shaped scratch with a curving SE extension, and NNE/SSW scratches lie near the rim under the 4 and 6 of the date. On Obverse Stage B only faint traces of the Stage A markers remain. Reverse Stage A: a series of SE scratches leaves LU of PLURIBUS and crosses the field, ending around the stem. A heavy scratch links the R of AMERICA with the second lower leaf, a series of SE scratches runs from AMERICA's last A to the M in UNUM, and heavy NW/SE scratches lie between R, I and C in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B has weaker Stage A markers and a new scratch from the S of PLURIBUS that reaches the upper parts of I and M in DIME and runs between them. Frank Baumann submitted Stage A and Ralph Huntzinger Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Its comments say it was formerly WDDO-027 and was renumbered when the doubled obverse working hub was found and left large gaps in the listings.
