Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as a Doubled Working Hub Reverse, the 1946 Roosevelt Dime WWHR-001 displays a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 11 o'clock, manifesting on the E of ONE, DIME, AMERICA, and UNUM. Hub-level doubling is mechanically distinct from die-level doubling: the misalignment occurred when the master hub impressed the working hub, meaning every working die produced from that hub inherited the same rotational spread. This is why WWHR-001 appears on coins from all three operating mints — Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco — since all received working dies derived from the same doubled hub. The Philadelphia version carries no mintmark and represents the type coin for this variety. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died in April 1945; the reverse features a torch flanked by olive and oak branches. As a first-year-of-issue variety, this hub doubling is present from the very inception of the Roosevelt series. The Class V clockwise rotation produces a subtle but consistent spread on the affected letters. Examine the E of ONE and the word DIME for confirmation.
