1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1946 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a Class II spread toward the center, is on the date and the designer's initials, with lighter doubling on WE TRUST. Obverse Stage A is Type I. NE/SW scratches cross the 46 of the date, WNW/ESE scratches pass through GOD WE TRUST, and a long scratch runs west from low on the L in LIBERTY over to the I of IN. On Obverse Stage B the doubling is much weaker; a short scratch heads NW from around the left center of the date's 4, and light die cracks show in the upper rear of the hair. Reverse Stage A carries the WWHR-001 doubling. E/W scratches cross DIM of DIME, and inside the M in DIME a short scratch runs north from its upper right. NE/SW scratches pass through the N of UNUM; a short gouge runs south from the lower right oak leaf, and another heads north off the lower olive's top. On Reverse Stage B a die crack leaves the rim at 2:00 and heads south through the left side of AMERICA's M, and a scratch curves downward off the torch base's right side. Of the Stage A markers, mostly only the weak gouges at the olive and the oak leaf remain. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A and Kevin Flynn Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Its comments say it was formerly WDDO-026 and was renumbered when the doubled obverse working hub was found and left large gaps in the listings. They also note that while it resembles WWHO-001, its doubling on the date is far stronger than the working hub's.
