1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017

Description

1946 WDDO-017 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong Class V clockwise (CW) spread from a pivot near 11:00 shows on the date, the designer's initials, the lower bust, IN GOD WE TRUST and the back of the neck, with slight doubling also on the top of the head and on LIB of LIBERTY. The obverse is Type I. A weak clash mark shows at the brow and on the nose west of the eye. Starting at the rim, a scratch heads SSW, just touching the left part of the T's horizontal bar, then crosses the R's lower right leg in LIBERTY and continues into the field. East of the earlobe is a N/S scratch, and a series of N/S scratches sits in the hair east of the ear. Another scratch runs SW from the lower left of LIBERTY's B to the chin. The reverse carries the doubling of the doubled reverse working hub WWHR-001. A scratch runs SE from the upper F of OF to the lower first A of AMERICA. Between the L of PLURIBUS and the N of ONE runs a series of heavy SE scratches, and a heavy series of scratches covers the oak leaves and branch. A NNW scratch heads toward the olive and its leaf from PL of PLURIBUS, and a NNE scratch leaves the E in ONE from its lower right. Joe Feld submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
