1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

1946 WDDO-012 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a Class II spread toward the center, is on the ear, the lower bust, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the designer's initials. Obverse Stage A is Type I. A short gouge runs SW from the upper left of the R in LIBERTY, and four short scratches run south from the upper eyelid. The upper nose has clash marks, and a NE/SW scratch lies at the brow. A N/S scratch starts at the chin, crosses the lower lip and nearly reaches the nose, and a series of N/S scratches fills the field between ER of LIBERTY and the brow. Obverse Stage B shows every Stage A marker weakened, and a small gouge sits inside the fork of LIBERTY's Y, nearer its left side. Reverse Stage A: a scratch heads WSW from the lower E of STATES, and another runs NW from the top of the P in PLURIBUS to an olive leaf. From the lower right of the D in UNITED, a scratch heads NE across the first S of STATES and on to the rim. A weak clash shows below the olive branch stem and along the branch's left side, NNE/SSW scratches cross the M in DIME at its lower opening, and two short gouges lie on the outside of AMERICA's first A, at its left center. On Reverse Stage B the Stage A markers are present but weaker, and a gouge appears in the field east of the base of the flame. Frank Baumann submitted Stage A and Kevin Flynn Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
