1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1946 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a strong Class II spread toward the center, found on the date, LIBERTY, the designer's initials and IN GOD WE TRUST, with lighter spread on the nostril, the bust and the lower profile. Some tripling appears on the date's 4, IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials. The obverse is Type I, with long scratches heading SW from the bottom of the nose. On the reverse, a gouge (dot) lies west of the torch holder at the very top of its left side, and a scratch leaves the D in DIME on its right side, running north by east and then bending NNE. Doug Riley submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. The entry's comments suggest the 'doubling' on the date, the designer's initials and IN GOD WE TRUST looks to be the result of dual hubbing with the doubled working hub, giving tripling or even quadrupling.
