1946 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Dating to the inaugural year of the Roosevelt dime series, WDDO-004 exhibits Class II spread towards the center on the date, designer's initials JS, and lightly on IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1946 launch of the Roosevelt design — honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died in April 1945 — meant that hub and die production was being refined for a brand-new design, potentially contributing to early hubbing errors. This variety was originally listed as WDDO-039 but was reassigned to WDDO-004 after the discovery of a doubled obverse working hub left large gaps in the earlier numbering sequence, prompting a comprehensive renumbering. The obverse is designated Type I, with short die scratches running north-northwest above the 9 in the date. On the reverse, a die crack runs from the rim at approximately 5:30 north along the left side of the I in DIME, then turns northwest to the bottom of the torch holder — a detailed crack path that aids attribution even on worn specimens. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946 10¢ WDDO-004.
