1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1946 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A spread to the NNW shows on the date, the lower neck, the ear, IN GOD WE TRUST and the L of LIBERTY, while ERTY shows a close spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A is Type I. A strong gouge lies between the hair just over the forehead and the lower Y of LIBERTY, and a short, strong N/S gouge sits between the 1 of the date and the designer's initials. Obverse Stage B adds a short NW/SE gouge in the field right of the date; the Stage A markers are weaker but still there. On Reverse Stage A, two long E/W scratches lie between the D of DIME and the E of ONE, a NW/SE die dent crosses the D of DIME, and a series of E/W scratches runs through and under ER of AMERICA. By Reverse Stage B, the dent at the D of DIME looks like a split upper serif, and the Stage A markers remain but weaker. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A and Joe Feld Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
