1946 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
A spread NNW shows on the date, bottom of the neck, the ear, IGWT and the L of LIBERTY. A close spread toward the center shows on ERTY. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Type I. Strong die gouge between the lower Y of LIBERTY and the hair just above the forehead. Short, strong N/S die gouge between the designer's initials and the 1 in the date. Obverse Stage B: Short NW/SE die gouge in the field to the right of the date. Stage A markers weaker but present. Reverse Stage A: Two long E/W die scratches between the E of ONE and D of DIME. Die dent NW/SE through the D of DIME. Series of E/W die scratches through and below ER of AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: Die dent at the D of DIME now has the appearance of a split upper serif. Stage A markers present but weaker.
