1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-026

Description

DDO-026, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime with strong spreading on the date, the designer's initials and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both catalogs cite it as FS-103 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1946-103, VarietyVista FS-103/805). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the doubling a strong Class V CW spread, pivoting near 12:00, on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the LIBE of LIBERTY, the designer's initials and the back of the neck. The obverse is Type I. A long NE scratch runs out of the hair, reaching the rim at 12:00, with two short SW scratches off the rim just west of it; another runs across the ER of LIBERTY from the upper right of the B to the top of the T; and many short scratches fan NW from the nose. On the reverse, Wexler notes the doubling seen on WWHR-001, a short NW/SE scratch on the upper oak leaves, chips under the lower olive leaves on the right, and a WNW/ESE scratch through the top opening of the M in AMERICA. The coin was submitted by John A. Wexler, and CONECA lists the die as 26-O-V. VarietyVista, crediting Joe Feld, records a strong spread on the date, on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the designer's initials (top to bottom), with a light spread on LIB and the back of the neck. It lists the obverse as ODV-001 and the reverse as its DDR-009. Under its marker codes UVC-028 and DMR-028, stage A is an early die state it has not confirmed. Stage B is a middle die state, with a clash on the bridge of the nose and many N-S scratches on the reverse. At stage C the obverse is in a late-middle die state and a crack runs from the base of the torch to the rim through the D of DIME. At stage D, a late die state on both sides, a crack runs NE through the hair.
