Description

Marking the first year of the Roosevelt dime, the 1946 DDO-025 exhibits strong spread on the date and designer's initials side by side, along with IN GOD WE TRUST, with medium to light spread on LIBERTY and the back of the neck. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt dime to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died in April 1945, and the denomination debuted in 1946 as a fitting tribute given Roosevelt's association with the March of Dimes campaign. Cataloged as UVC-027 DMR-027 and also designated as VarietyVista obverse die variety ODV-001, this variety has been documented across three die stages. Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state. Stage B at mid-die-state shows a die scratch through BERT of LIBERTY and a small die gouge dot in the fold of the neck halfway from ear to chin, with the reverse also at MDS. Stage C at late die state features a light die crack from the head to the rim at the K-1 position. As a doubled die from the inaugural year of one of America's longest-running coin designs, the DDO-025 holds special appeal for collectors seeking first-year varieties on the Roosevelt dime series.
