1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
Inaugurating the Roosevelt Dime series in its debut year of 1946, DDO-012 captures hub doubling on the very first vintage of John R. Sinnock's portrait design honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died in April 1945. The doubling presents as a medium spread on LIBERTY, the eyelid, and the profile from the center top of the head to the bottom of the neck at the base of the bust. Die markers tracked under UVC-014 and DMR-014 document three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die clash on the bridge of the nose at MDS with a die scratch running North from inside the upper Y of LIBERTY and numerous die scratches on the reverse also at MDS, and Stage C with both obverse and reverse in Late Die State. The obverse is further classified as ODV-001 by VarietyVista, linking it to a specific obverse die variety designation. Twelve documented doubled die obverses for the inaugural 1946 date speaks to the transitional challenges the Mint faced in tooling up for an entirely new dime design, as new hub-to-die relationships were being established for the first time. The 1946 Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 255 million Roosevelt Dimes — a robust figure driven by post-war economic expansion and the public's strong demand for small-denomination coinage after years of wartime constraints.
