1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009

Description

Struck in the first year of the Roosevelt Dime series, the 1946 DDO-009 carries special significance as a doubled die from the debut of John R. Sinnock's design honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died in April 1945. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-011 and DMR-011, this ninth doubled die obverse exhibits light spread on the date, TRUST, and designer's initials from top to bottom, with light doubling at the bust base. Classified as obverse die variety ODV-001 with three stages: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C confirmed at Late Die State on both sides. The LDS confirmation indicates extensive die use, with late-state characteristics providing markers beyond the original hub doubling. Roosevelt's portrait replaced the Winged Liberty (Mercury) design, and 1946's inaugural production established the hub configurations that would define the series. Struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver at 17.9mm. Examine the date, TRUST, and designer's initials for light spread, and check the bust base for doubling.
