1946 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018 / DDO-008

Description

DDO-008, which Wexler numbers WDDO-018, is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Roosevelt dime with strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials, and medium spread on LIBERTY. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-104 (Wexler writes FS-10-1946-104). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 12:00 on the initials, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, a medium spread on LIBERTY, and a light spread on the lower edge of the bust. The obverse is a Type I. Its obverse markers are light north-south scratches in front of the forehead, more north-south scratches on the back of the nose, a clash at the bridge of the nose, and a light clash on the upper throat. On the reverse, heavy NNE/SSW scratches lie between the upper right side of the olive leaves and the top band of the torch holder. Joe Feld submitted it, and Ken Potter supplied an updated coin. CONECA lists the die as 8-O-V. Wexler notes the variety was once listed as WDDO-032 and was renumbered because finding the doubled obverse working hub opened large gaps in its listings. VarietyVista credits Joe Feld and describes strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the bottom edge of the bust, with the designer's initials doubled side by side and medium spread on LIBERTY. It gives the obverse its design-variety code ODV-001 and tracks the die under the marker codes UVC-010 and DMR-010. Stage A (early die state) and stage C (late) are unconfirmed. In stage B the die shows clash marks under the chin and on the nose's bridge, in a middle die state, with north-south scratches on the nose in front of the eye; the reverse is also in a middle state.
