Description

The fifth doubled die obverse for the 1946 Roosevelt Dime, DDO-005 exhibits light spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and designer's initials JS (John R. Sinnock) in a top-to-bottom direction — meaning the secondary images are shifted vertically, producing a subtle shadow below or above the primary design elements. Die markers include UVC-007 and DMR-007, with three documented stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C with both obverse and reverse confirmed in late die state. The obverse is identified as ODV-001, the first obverse die variety classification for the 1946 date. As the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime — introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945, with his long association with the March of Dimes providing a fitting connection to the denomination — any doubled die from 1946 carries first-year-of-issue significance. The Philadelphia Mint struck 255,250,000 Roosevelt Dimes in 1946, all in 90% silver at 2.50 grams on a 17.9mm planchet. Cataloged by VarietyVista. Examine the date, motto, and the JS initials at the base of Liberty's neck truncation for the vertical spread characteristic of this top-to-bottom doubling.
