Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as 1946-D 25-cent WDDO-004, this Washington Quarter variety combines hub doubling with an obverse die crack, creating dual interest for variety and die-state collectors. The doubling shows a spread to the north on the date — the secondary hub impression displaced date numerals upward relative to the primary. The obverse die crack runs across the base of Washington's bust, a prominent diagnostic feature that developed during service life from repeated striking stress, independent of the hub doubling. While the date spread was created during die manufacture, the crack formed later, making this die's coins traceable through progressive die states as the crack widened during production. No significant reverse die markers were noted, and no cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 1946-D was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 6.25 grams during the first full post-war production year. John Flanagan's obverse positions the date below Washington's portrait, where the northward spread is detectable under magnification.
