1946 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1946-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread pivoting from about 12:00 appears on the date, the designer's initials, the ribbon's bottom and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, a heavy scratch links the lower 4 with the 6, and a scratch connects the lower 9 with the left end of the 4's horizontal bar. A short, heavy gouge heads east off the lower 1, and over the E in LIBERTY, above its center bar, lies a strong scratch. On the reverse, a heavy gouge joins the lower parts of the Q and U in QUARTER, a strong scratch crosses the lower ARTER DOLLAR, a short, strong gouge heads west off the top of the I in AMERICA, and many other scratches run through UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
