1946-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Post-war Denver Mint production of Washington quarters generated this doubled die obverse, cataloged as DDO-008 by VarietyVista with a medium spread visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. The variety is tracked under die markers UVC-0617 and DMR-016, with an extensive four-stage die progression documented from early die state through very late die state. Stage A through Stage C are listed as early, mid, and late die state respectively, all remaining unconfirmed. Stage D, at very late die state, presents the most dramatic diagnostics: a heavy die crack across the forehead and hair, a die crack across the bust into the queue, a die crack descending the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER, and a die crack from the US of PLURIBUS to the wing. The VLDS obverse cracking pattern provides an unmistakable identification fingerprint for advanced die state specimens. Collectors encountering this variety will most likely find heavily circulated examples, as the very late die state indicators suggest the die was used well beyond its normal service life before retirement.
