1946-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Struck at the Denver Mint during the inaugural year of Roosevelt Dime production, this eighth doubled die reverse carries VarietyVista catalog codes UVC-053 and DMR-017 and displays medium spread on STATES OF with lighter spread extending to AMERICA, the torch flame, the olive leaves, and notching visible on UNITED. The Roosevelt Dime debuted in 1946 following President Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in April 1945, with Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock creating a design that featured Roosevelt's portrait on the obverse and a torch flanked by olive and oak branches on the reverse. As the very first year of a new design, 1946 die production involved establishing new hub-to-die processes, and multiple hub impressions were standard practice — creating opportunities for misalignment between impressions that produced doubled dies. Stage A die markers include strong die scratches through STATES at Early-to-Mid Die State with the obverse at MDS, while Stage B places both reverse and obverse at Mid-Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State remains unconfirmed. The obverse die paired with this reverse is identified as ODV-001, providing a marriage attribution that connects this specific obverse-reverse die pair. The 1946-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver composition — a standard that would continue until the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the switch to copper-nickel clad — and the combination of first-year-of-issue status with silver content makes doubled die varieties from this date especially appealing to collectors. DDR-008 represents a moderately strong doubled die that rewards careful examination of the legend and design elements surrounding the central torch.
