Description

Holding the primary catalog position for the prolific 1946-D date, this VarietyVista-documented Lincoln Wheat Cent features a distinctive secondary mintmark with a chipped serif at Stage C. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-226 / DMR-002 with Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with strong, sharp secondary mintmark at MDS and reverse at LDS. UVC-227 / DMR-003: Stage C with medium secondary mintmark, with the vertical bar north of the lower serif chipped out at LDS, die crack in hair extending through forehead, die crack from rim through shoulder to lapel, and reverse die changed at MDS; Stage D with weak secondary mintmark at VLDS and reverse at LDS; Stage E with obverse and reverse at VLDS. The chipped serif on the secondary mintmark at Stage C is a distinctive feature that distinguishes this die from other 1946-D RPMs. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1946-D was among the highest-mintage Denver Wheat Cents of the postwar era.
