1946-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Third documented repunched mintmark for the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel, RPM-003 records a hand-punched mint mark variety from the first postwar year after the return to standard composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-347 and DMR-004, this variety was struck at the Denver Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel — the normal alloy that resumed after the wartime silver composition (56% Cu, 35% Ag, 9% Mn) ended with 1945 production. The restoration of regular composition also meant the D mint mark returned to its original small size on the reverse, replacing the large D that had appeared above Monticello during the wartime years. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B at mid-die state (MDS), and Stage C with obverse and reverse in late die state (LDS).
