Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501 in the Fivaz-Stanton catalog, this 1946-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-002 documents one of the more dramatic repunched mintmark orientations: D over Inverted D — the first punch was applied upside down before a correctly oriented D was punched over it. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-346 and DMR-003, three die stages trace the die's life. Stage A shows early die state when the inverted D remnants are most visible beneath the corrected letter. Stage B shows the RPM not fully broken out at center, with portions of the inverted D partially obscured by the overlapping correct punch. Stage C advances to where the RPM is fully broken out, with the inverted letter clearly distinguishable. The D/Inverted D orientation is among the rarest RPM configurations, requiring the mintmark punch to have been held completely upside down during the first application — a more extreme error than typical directional misalignment. The FS-501 reference ensures grading service recognition. The 1946-D marked the return to standard copper-nickel after the wartime silver alloy years.
