1945-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Fourth documented doubled die reverse for the 1945 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, DDR-004 displays strong extra thickness on all rim letters, E PLURIBUS UNUM, lower leaves, branches, and stems. Cross-referenced as UVC-0563 and DMR-017, this variety has been tracked through three die stages: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state is also unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state shows a die crack across the bust on the obverse with the reverse also in late die state. The strong extra thickness affecting the full range of peripheral lettering and botanical elements indicates significant misalignment during the hubbing process, producing doubling identifiable under standard magnification. The 1945-D Washington Quarter was struck during the final year of World War II in the original 90% silver composition that would continue until 1964. John Flanagan's Washington design had been in production since 1932. The die crack across the bust at Stage C provides a useful secondary marker for identifying late die state specimens.
