Description

The 1945-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-014, catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-201 and DMR-016, is a repunched mintmark variety from the final wartime Lincoln cent year. The 1945 cents were struck in the copper-zinc alloy that followed the steel cents of 1943, as the salvaged brass cents of 1944 had been. Stage A documentation for this variety is unusually detailed for an Early Die State: the secondary mintmark is very light; a circular die gouge appears under the bust; a second circular die gouge cuts through the upper IN GOD WE TRUST; and the reverse is also at EDS. Stage B (Middle Die State) is unconfirmed. Stage C (Late Die State) is unconfirmed. The circular die gouges under the bust and through the motto are noteworthy obverse markers that survive independent of mintmark repunching, providing an additional attribution layer. The 1945-D cent was produced in substantial numbers, meaning RPM-014 exists within a large host population — making dedicated examination under magnification necessary to locate the secondary mintmark.
