1945-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Carrying the notably high die marker DMR-063, DDO-011 on the 1945-D Jefferson Nickel reflects the extensive documentation effort applied to wartime silver nickel varieties. Light spread appears on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date on Felix Schlag's obverse — the standard trio of pickup points for Jefferson nickel DDOs. Die marker UVC-796 accompanies DMR-063 to provide the attribution fingerprint for this working die. The 1945-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), with a large D mintmark positioned prominently above the dome of Monticello on the reverse. As the final year of wartime composition, 1945 nickels represent the last issues before the Mint returned to standard copper-nickel in 1946. The DDO-011 designation itself reveals the depth of variety research for this date — at least eleven doubled die obverse varieties have been cataloged, each from a separate working die. Light spread requires careful magnified examination, but the star's geometric precision makes it a particularly effective diagnostic point for confirming subtle hub doubling.
