Description

A dual variety combining obverse hub doubling with a repunched mintmark on the reverse, DDO-010 on the 1945-D wartime Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST while the reverse carries RPM-004 — a repunched D mintmark showing evidence of multiple mintmark punch impressions. Die markers UVC-69 and DMR-003 confirm this working die, with UVC-69's notably low number placing it among the earliest entries in the VarietyVista cataloging system. The dual variety status means a single coin bears two independently collectible attribution points: the obverse hub doubling (DDO-010) and the reverse repunched mintmark (RPM-004), each resulting from a different manufacturing error — the DDO from hub-to-die misalignment and the RPM from the hand-punching process that placed the D mintmark into the working die with at least two imprecisely positioned blows. During this era, mintmarks were individually punched into each working die by hand, and the large D above Monticello's dome on wartime issues provided a particularly visible target where repunching evidence is readily apparent. The 1945-D was struck in the wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese) at the Denver Mint, representing the final year of wartime composition before production returned to standard copper-nickel in 1946. Collectors should examine both IN GOD WE TRUST for the light obverse spread and the large D mintmark for traces of the RPM-004 repunching.
