The notably high DMR-062 reference number indicates extensive die marker documentation for the 1945-D production — among the highest DMR values encountered in the Jefferson Nickel series — reflecting both the volume of Denver's wartime output and the thoroughness of variety research applied to this final year of the silver alloy composition. The 1945-D carries the large D mintmark above Monticello's dome, distinguishing it from the standard small D placement used before and after the wartime period. Struck in the emergency silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), the 1945-D represents the last Denver Mint nickel to use this composition before production returned to standard copper-nickel in 1946.
