1944-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0443 with die marriage DMR-008, the 1944-S Washington Quarter DDO-006 shows medium spread concentrated on ERTY of LIBERTY — a partial spread where the doubling is most visible on the final four letters while being less prominent on LIB. The reverse features a Large S mint mark (MMS-003). Three die states are documented: early and mid die states remain unconfirmed, while the late die state shows dramatic die deterioration with a die crack running across the bust and another crack across the forehead on the obverse, accompanied by LDS on the reverse. These late die state cracks across prominent facial features of Washington's portrait create visually striking examples that combine the obverse doubling with extensive die failure. The 1944-S Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint during World War II in the standard 90% silver composition, and the concentrated medium spread on ERTY — stronger than light but less than strong — suggests the hub misalignment was positioned to produce maximum displacement at the right side of the motto area.
